Steel Authority of India has reported progress on its Bhilai Steel plant expansion project. The project involves expanding the hot metal capacity to 7.5 million tpa and crude steel capacity to 7.0 million tpa. The project is estimated to cost Rs.172650 million. As of January 2010, all the major packages for steel melting shop III (SMS) had been awarded and the engineering and design work is underway and work on SMS-III is expected to be completed by December 2011. The expansion programme is likely to be completed by August 2012.
Steel Authority of India is planning to set up a new & third steel melting shop at the Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP). The SMS will have a capacity of 4 million tpa. The SMS will be equipped with latest technology, including modern quality control system. The orders for basic oxygen furnace shop complex package and continuous casting plant package have been placed with Siemens VAI, Germany. On completion of the construction of SMS III, BSP will be able to produce four million tonnes of clean steel of superior quality. The project is scheduled to be completed by December 2011.
