Nalco to set up its second smelter in Sundergarh

Nalco, a leading producer of aluminium is planning to set up its second smelter plant in Sundergarh district in Orissa. It had earlier considered, Jharsuguda however it had been spaced up by other upcoming aluminium projects of Vedanta (1.6 mtpa) Hindalco (0.36 mtpa ) and L&T Dubal (0.3 mtpa). Considering the environmental impact, the state government had asked Nagpur based National Environment Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) to conduct a pollution carrying capacity study for the region and it has put a cap at 2.0 mtpa for the region. Now, Nalco is looking to set up the project 200 kms away and the size of the project depends on water availability. The company would need 1200 acres of land for 0.5 mtpa aluminium smelter and 1260 MW captive power generation unit. It has written to state government for construction of a barrage across river Ib for the water requirement of the project and agreed to bear the cost of Rs. 1000 million.

RSB Metaltech plans alumina refinery in Rayagada

RSB Metaltech Pvt Ltd is planning to set up an alumina refinery complex in villages Rambu, Talaanchalbadi, Baraja, Raikona in Rayagada district of Orissa. The project involves setting of 0.7 mtpa capacity of alumina refinery and a captive power generation unit of 30 MW in first phase. Later the refinery will be expanded to 1.4 mtpa to produce aluminium of 350,000 TPA. The refinery will use bayer process with medium pressure digestion technology and high productivity precipitation. The total project cost is estimated at Rs. 31608 million.

Hindalco Industries to set up a beverage cans unit

Hindalco Industries is expanding its beverage cans unit in Hirakud. It may be noted, the company has acquired Novelis, a Canada based company which is the world largest recycler of aluminium beverage cans and is the no.1 producer on Europe, South America and Asia. It is also the second largest producer of flat rolled aluminium products in north America. Hindalco is closing down Novelsis’s Rogerstone plant in Britain and is shipping all the machineries and equipment to Hirakud. It has acquired land for the project and received all statutory clearances.
